Melissa Callahan, LMFT is welcoming you to receive couples or individual therapy with her at her practice, Callahan Therapy & Consultation.

Meet Melissa Callahan

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), specializing in attachment-based relational therapy. I believe relationships profoundly shape our lives, and I approach each session with curiosity, empathy, warmth, and a touch of humor. My goal is to guide clients respectfully and collaboratively through the therapeutic process, fostering an environment where healing can take place.

Since starting my practice over a decade ago, I’ve had the privilege of working with couples, individuals, and families. I am non-monogamy-affirming, anti-racist, culturally humble, and an ally to the LGBTQ+ community. My counseling philosophy is heavily informed by attachment theory, which highlights the core elements of building secure, meaningful relationships.

I aim to create a safe environment focused on your unique needs, while ensuring your wellness and sense of security amidst the challenges of therapy, helping each person feel seen, heard, and understood. I combine clinical knowledge, compassion, intention, authenticity, warmth, and humor in developing my client relationships.

My Background

I seek to support those who are willing to examine their inner world, including the relationships with themselves and others. My purpose is to support others in their becoming. The privilege of helping people lead more authentic and fulfilling lives fuels me to offer clinical excellence.

I became a therapist after leaving my first career in the corporate world. I understand the demands, as well as experiencing the high risk of changing careers, because it was more aligned with my authentic self. I've experienced developmental trauma, witnessed relationship formation, dissolution, and dysfunction from early childhood. I continue to work through perfectionism each and every day.

My heritage carries the weight of intergenerational trauma from both sides of my family. The combination of my environment, systems, and an innate drive for rebellion and healthier living has propelled me toward finding my purpose as a therapist. In this search, I found marriage and family therapy, a psychology centered on examining the systems in which a person lives and the long-lasting impact they have on them.

Therapeutic Approach

Looking at relationships and all of the puzzle pieces that contribute to what is happening within them captivates me. Individual fulfillment is directly related to how satisfied and secure we feel in our relationships. I believe supporting couples helps them as individuals, their partnership, and ultimately trickles down into their relationship with their children if they are parents. Those children will then have a better chance to develop into more secure and authentic adults, breaking any potential cycles from continuing, and building stronger relationships themselves.

Starting therapy is a brave and vulnerable step, and it’s important to find the right support. To ensure you receive effective treatment, I utilize research-backed frameworks that promote growth and healing. I’m a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist (EFT), a model proven to foster deeper emotional connections and lasting change in relationships. Whether you’re a couple or an individual, EFT has shown to be highly effective in creating meaningful transformation.

I also incorporate self-compassion techniques and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to support emotional well-being and personal growth. One of the foundations of not only my practice, but of the practitioners I invite to join my team of mental health specialists is that we are all eternal learners, always challenging ourselves to grow and develop in a dynamic work environment. By continuing to refine my skills and creating a safe and brave space, I aim to help you step into self-understanding, healing, discovery, and growth.

My relationships are the most important part of my life! My husband, my children, my friendships. I believe laughter is the greatest medicine, and I incorporate fun into my life in any way possible. My greatest passion outside of therapy is dance. Movement was a therapeutic and emotional outlet for me throughout childhood, and I take weekly classes to release energy and emotions that words can't express, challenging my body in new and different ways. I also think the beauty of nature is awe-inspiring, especially the horizon on the ocean.
